Puppies

Accepting Reservations for Our 2020 Litters

Basenjis are a “primitive” breed, which means, in addition to being smart and independent, they usually have only one heat cycle per year: north of the equator, breeding season is in the fall; south of the equator, breeding season is in the spring.  In the US, puppies are almost always born late fall to early winter. This is unlike other breeds which cycle twice a year.

Puppies are born 63 days, nine weeks, after breeding, and are ready to go to their new homes at 9-10 weeks of age.  We accept a limited number of deposits based on the number of puppies expected.  Our waiting list fills up quickly, so if you’re interested in getting a puppy, we recommend contacting us the sooner the better and going through the approval process for our waiting list.

We encourage anyone interested to contact us and arrange a time to visit and meet our dogs.  (Note: for safety reasons we do not allow visitors one week prior to delivery and until the puppies are three weeks old.)  We support an ongoing relationship with puppy buyers that continues that long after the puppies leave for their new homes, and welcome questions and offer advice for the life of your puppy.   Once approved, a deposit will ensure you receive a puppy.  The deposit is voluntary, but only buyers with deposits will be guaranteed a puppy.  Deposits are nonrefundable, as we will be turning away subsequent potential buyers, referring them to other breeders who may have puppies.

We allow our puppies to leave sometime after 9 weeks of age, but we do not make our “show keeper” picks until 8-9 weeks of age. The 8-9 week evaluation is the most determinate of show quality, and since we breed to carry on our lines and to show our puppies, we do not take reservations or deposits on specific puppies.  If you have a preference, we will try to take that into consideration, but please know that as breeders we will make our decisions first.  After the show evaluations, we will give you our best observations on the puppy’s temperaments and characteristics and assist you with picking the puppy that will be best suited for you and your household.

Your puppy will be pre-registered with the AKC, will have its dew claws removed, will have the initial vaccinations for Distemper and Parvovirus, and will be DNA tested or cleared for Fanconi and PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) when applicable.

If interested in meeting us and our dogs please select “Contact Us” at the top of this page and send us a message.  If you are interested in being on our waiting list for puppies, please complete the questionnaire located on the “Contact Us” page.
